Question: Do I need to buy my computer hardware from my PM software company?
They imply that I do in order for them to support me.
Answer:
The short answer is No. It is a terrible state of the industry that they continue to apply hardware sales pressure using scare tactics such as these. They're insane to expect consumers to buy their clone hardware at high prices. Our experience has shown that the hardware they sell is usually twice the price of a comparably equipped Dell computer, and usually of lesser quality. Their big pitch is that "It's certified to work with our software". Big deal. If there software can't work on a generic Dell business PC, it isn't worth buying. It's also interesting to note that their support terms usually state that if you load ANY software on their hardware other than what shipped with it, they won't support that system. So, if you load software like Quicken and then experience a problem a month later, they will make you uninstall Quicken before they will help you. We are compassionate to their problems in a certain way. Supporting the infinite variety of PCs and software packages is a daunting and difficult task (we know, we do it too!). The solution is not scare tactics and expensive custom hardware. The solution is for them to build robust and reliable software.
So, how do you convince them to let you use your own hardware? It's not easy, and you usually have to push a fair bit. We usually present them with this scenario: If you were a new customer coming to them, and you already owned computers that were running a competitors PM software and you want to convert to their product, could you without having to throw away all your old equipment. Our experience the answer is 100% yes. They want you as a software customer, and know that you would not convert if you had to re-buy all your computers. They still support this scenario if your computers all meet their minimum requirements (which is fair). So what's the difference between this and you just buying your own computers? None. Just buy a computer system that meets their minimum requirements.
This is a serious issue, and should be on the table and resolved before you make the final decision on buying their software. If necessary get MME involved in the discussions and we'll present your case for you. If they will not relent, then I would reconsider buying their application. The lesson is buy your hardware from a computer company like Dell or Gateway that's sole focus is computers. Similarly, buy your software from a software company like them whose sole focus (at least it should be) is to build PM software.
